New Power Projects in Oklahoma Could Increase Generation Capacity by 18.6%

Four new coal-fired units, representing 73% (2,900 MW) of the new generation, are scheduled to be installed at, or adjacent to, existing power stations.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Power generation developers are currently studying over fifteen projects for development in Oklahoma, totaling over 3,950 megawatts (MW) of new power generation. This would represent an increase in generating capacity in Oklahoma of about 18.6%, if these projects come to fruition. There are currently 60 operational Oklahoma power plants producing about 21,272 MW. Most of the new units with the exception of the windfarms are to be added at existing power stations.

Four new coal-fired units, representing 73% (2,900 MW) of the new generation, are scheduled to be installed at, or adjacent to, existing power stations. The largest of these projects, Red Rock Generating Station, will be adjacent to OG&E Electric Company’s Sooner Lake Power Station in Red Rock. OG&E Electric Company is a subsidiary of OGE Energy (NYSE:OGE ) (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). The station will be owned 50% by AEP-Public Service Company of Oklahoma (Tulsa Oklahoma), a subsidiary of American Electric Power Company (NYSE:AEP ) (Columbus Ohio), 42% by OG&E, and 8% by Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) (Edmond, Oklahoma).

Natural gas-fired units, representing 18.8% of the new generation, will be made up primarily of four peaking units at two AEP Power Stations: Riverside (Jenks, Oklahoma) and Southwestern Power Station (Washita, Oklahoma), and a new grassroot combined-cycle plant near Lawton, Oklahoma owned by Energetix LLC (Lenexa, Kansas).

Wind energy makes up the final 9.87% (390.50 MW) of the proposed power at six windfarms varying in size from 25.5 MW to 150 MW. The majority of the wind energy is being developed by large wind developers (FPL Energy, Edison Mission Energy, and Babcock & Brown). Two of the smaller windfarms are being developed by local Native American Tribal entities: Cherokee Nation Enterprises (Catoosa, Oklahoma), a subsidiary of the Cherokee Nation (Tahlequah, Oklahoma) is developing one, while the Kaw Nation (Kaw City, Oklahoma) is developing another. Both are near Newkirk, Oklahoma.
