Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--J.M. Stuart Generating Station, which is located in Aberdeen, Ohio, shut down its 610-megawatt (MW) Unit 4 on Saturday to repair a circulating water pump that failed, and an air heater basket that was plugged with bottom ash. The station is operated by Dayton Power & Light (Dayton, Ohio), which owns 35% of the station's four units. Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) owns 39%, and AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) owns 26%.
Officials believe that the circulating pump shorted out after water filled up in a bearing. The air heater baskets will be removed so employees can unplug the ash buildup and debris in the boiler, but the boiler has to cool before they can begin.
Officials said the outage duration may take longer than a week, but based on their preliminary findings, they expect to return the unit to service on Monday, August 3, if there are no delays.
The coal-fired plant has four generating units and a total capacity of 2,440 MW when at full load. Units 1, 2 and 3 are online and will continue to operate at full capacity.
