Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, which is in Plymouth, Massachusetts, had to shut down Tuesday, December 3, due to a steam leak on a valve that provides sealing steam to the main reactor. The plant is owned by Entergy Nuclear Generation Company, a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana).
The leak, which does not present a danger to nuclear safety, required the reactor to be shut down to make repairs, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
While performing a table-top drill, officials at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station discovered that bridge conferencing lines for emergency preparedness were unavailable. The lines affected include the mitigation line, plant data phone, radiation data phone, emergency conference line, and the backup conference bridge line. Reviews to determine the cause and efforts to restore the system are ongoing; however, plant officials told Industrial Info that they hope to be back online by the end of the week.
NRC resident inspectors monitored the shutdown and will observe the repairs.
The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station has one generating unit, which began operations in 1972, and a total generating capacity of 690 megawatts when at full load.
