Salt River $400 Million Transmission Line Project to Meet Future Energy Demand

Salt River Project (Tempe, Arizona) has completed the siting process and has received the permit from the Arizona Corporation Commission to construct the Pinal-West to Southeast Valley/Browning Project (PW-SEV/BRG Project). The project is the result of the Central Arizona Transmission System Study (CATS), a study conducted by the state’s electric utilities that concludes that transmission delivery will increase reliability and much needed energy to the growing demand.

The plan for the PW-SEV/BRG project is to construct four substations, with the first one being 500 kV-345kV (kilovolt) in the southwest of City of Maricopa, with a 100-mile overhead transmission line to the second substation of 500kV-230kV that will interconnect with the existing Santa Rosa substation, to the third substation of 230kV-69kV in the town of Queen Creek, to the fourth 500kV substation at Eleven Mile Corner Road, ending at the existing Browning substation. Construction on the estimated $400 million project is scheduled for the summer of 2006, with completion expected in 2013.

With Salt River being the owner and construction manager of the project, other participants also include: Arizona Public Service Company (Phoenix, Arizona), Tucson Electric Power Company (Tucson, Arizona), the Santa Cruz Water and Power District Association (Casa Grande, Arizona), Electrical District #2 (Casa Grande, Arizona) and the Southwest Transmission Cooperative, Incorporated (Benson, Arizona).
