Shanghai's First 1,000-Megawatt Ultra-Supercritical Coal-Fired Unit Begins Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Shanghai's first 1,000-megawatt ultra-supercritical coal-fired unit has been put into operation at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao No. 3 power plant, Shenergy Company Limited announced on March 27, 2008.

The project was jointly invested by: Shenergy Company Limited (40%), Guodian Power Development Company Limited (Beijing) (40%) and Shanghai Electric Power Company Limited (Shanghai) (20%). The project, which includes plans for one more 1,000 MW unit of the same type, aims to alleviate Shanghai's power shortage while achieving the objective of the 11th five-year plan (2006-10) of energy conservation and emissions reduction. The total investment for the project is about $1.2 billion.

During the unit's trial operation, the maximum load reached 1,090 MW, a record high in China. According to Shenergy, the second unit is also scheduled to go into operation this year. By that time, the total installed capacity of the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Power Base will reach 5,000 MW, effectively alleviating Shanghai's power shortage.
