Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Shaw Group (NYSE:SHAW) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), which is conducting feasibility studies and front end engineering and design (FEED) for two grassroots refinery projects in Iraq, has been awarded a contract by Iraq's South Refineries Company to provide a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the 140,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Basra.
The United Sates Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is funding the feasibility study through a grant to the Southern Refineries Company, which is under the country's Ministry of Oil. This is the first time USTDA has made a direct grant to an Iraqi recipient and marks the agency's support for the country's long-term economic development. The study will assess the current condition of the refinery and estimate the engineering, equipment supply and construction services required to improve its operation.
James Glass, the president of Shaw Energy & Chemicals Group, said that the study would help to promote the development of Iraq's oil business and modernize vital facilities.
"This is Shaw's fourth refining project in Iraq, reinforcing our continuing commitment in the Middle East region," Glass said.
The projects the company is already working on are situated near the cities of Maissan and Kirkuk, and both are 150,000-barrel-per-day projects. The feed element of the contracts covers all process units, offsite facilities and utilities for both refineries.
In another project, Midland Refineries Company's refinery in Daura, Shaw, in partnership with Axens (Rueil, Malmaison, France), is providing a process design package for a 30,000-barrel-per-day residual fluidized cracking unit.
