Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Snow and frozen ground have temporarily stalled construction on Dalkia Canada's (Vancouver, British Columbia) two 40-megawatt (MW) biomass plants in Merritt and Fort Saint James, British Columbia.

The two facilities will utilize waste from British Columbia's forest industry, such as sawmills, wood chips and forest waste. Each site includes a stoker boiler and a 40-MW, grate-design steam turbine generator. Electricity produced at the sites will be sold to British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority (Vancouver, British Columbia).

Construction at the Merritt site is now scheduled for this fall, with completion by the end of 2016 or early 2017, while site preparation at the Fort Saint James site will begin next month and be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construction (Madrid, Spain). Dalkia Canada previously negotiated with SNC-Lavalin (Montreal, Quebec), but a deal was not reached.
