Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Veolia North America LLC (Boston, Massachusetts) has set a fall target completion date for two new Canadian biomass power plant projects.
The biomass energy projects were developed to aid and supply BC Hydro & Power Authority (Vancouver, Canada) with renewable energy to cut the discharge of carbon dioxide and provide the electric utility with renewable energy credits and reduce environmentally harmful emissions.
Located in Fort Saint James and Merritt, British Columbia, the identical biomass plants will each have a 40-megawatt generation capacity. Construction of both facilities is essentially completed, and the plants are undergoing testing and commissioning. They are expected to be fully operational by the end of the third quarter this year.
Construction of the Fort Saint James facility began in March 2014, followed by the start of construction on the Merritt facility four months later. Both projects were delayed and experienced work stoppages due to disputes over payments to TVE Industrial Services (Kamloops, British Columbia), which was a subcontractor to engineering, procurement and construction contractor Iberdrola Engineering and Construction, a unit of the Iberdrola Group (Bilbao, Spain).
The projects, each with a total investment value of $235 million, are back on track. The estimated 307,000 tons per year of wood residuals and sawdust feedstock supplies for the plants have been secured, despite the shuttering of area sawmills.
