TransCanada Energy Begins Construction of $500 Million Power Project in Arizona

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--TransCanada Energy Limited, a subsidiary of TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta), has began construction of a $500 million, 575-megawatt (MW) generation station in Coolidge, Arizona.

Construction for the project began this month and is scheduled to commence full commercial operations in summer 2011. The project will consist of constructing 12 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) 45-MW natural-gas-fired LM6000PC SPRINT combustion turbine generators, which will operate in a simple-cycle peaking configuration, providing power during the summer and winter months, when energy demands are at a high level. TransCanada has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Salt River Project (SRP) (Phoenix, Arizona) for all of the power produced. The facility will receive natural gas from both the El Paso Natural Gas and Transwestern pipelines, and will be connect to a new SRP high-voltage transmission line that is currently under construction.

The Industrial Company (Steamboat Springs, Colorado), a subsidiary of Peter Kiewit Sons' Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska), will provide the turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services for the duration of the project.
