Uganda Aims for 1,500 MW of Geothermal by 2040

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Uganda's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development recently unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance Uganda's geothermal power capacity, with a target of 450 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and 1,500 MW by 2040. Industrial info is tracking 27 geothermal projects, totaling more than US$4 billion of investment, across Uganda.

This initiative will focus on harnessing geothermal energy from four key sites out of 27 potential locations. These four sites are located in the western regions of Uganda, particularly around Lake Albert and Lake Edward, covering the districts of Kasese, Hoima, Bundibugyo and Nebbi.

Broadly, Uganda seeks to diversify its energy mix and reduce its dependence on hydroelectric power, which has proven to be vulnerable to changing weather patterns.
