U.K.'s Largest Ethanol Plant to Start This Summer, Ensus I Will Be Europe's Largest Producer

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ensus Group (Yarm, England), owned by U.S. private equity funds The Carlyle Group (Washington, D.C.) and Riverstone Holdings LLC (New York, New York), is preparing to start operations of Europe's largest fuel ethanol production facility, located in Wilton, Teesside, in northeast England. The facility is known as Ensus I.

The plant has been under construction since the summer of 2007 and is being built by Simon Carves Limited (Cheadle, England) and utilizes Katzen International Incorporated's (Cincinnati, Ohio) licensed process technology.

The plant will produce 400 million liters (105 U.S. gallons) of ethanol annually from 1.2 million metric tons of wheat feedstocks. The facility will also generate 350,000 tons of high-protein animal feeds and 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide that will be sold to the beverage industry. The wheat feedstock will be provided by Cargill Incorporated (Wayzata, Minnesota), which will also take the plant's distillers grains.

Construction costs to build the plant are estimated to be in the $500 million range. Ensus' long-range plans are to build a number of plants in the region, and a site study is currently being conducted to locate Ensus II somewhere in mainland Europe.

Currently there are three fuel ethanol plants operating in the U.K. with a combined annual production capacity of more than 155 million gallons of the renewable fuel.
