Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 1 at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant, which is located in Athens, Alabama, powered down Tuesday night and was taken offline after a leak that was discovered in the drywall. The station is owned and operated by Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE:TVE) (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee).

Plant officials are trying to determine the extent of the leak. Officials said that if the needed repairs are minimal, the unit should return to service by early next week.

The 3,310-megawatt (MW) Browns Ferry plant has three operational units that are General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) boiler water reactors: the 1,101-MW Unit 1; the 1,104-MW Unit 2; and the 1,105-MW Unit 3. Units 2 and 3 were not affected by the shut down, and both continue to operate at full power.
