The projects include grassroot plants, building expansions and upgrades. Perhaps the largest expansion planned for this segment of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry is the $1.2 billion Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC (Nashville, Tennessee) tire manufacturing plant in Graniteville, South Carolina. Bridgestone plans to construct a 2 million-square-foot tire plant on 545-acre site. The plant will be constructed in phases. Site preparation is currently under way, and construction is expected to start in the next month or so. Completion of the new facility is currently anticipated by the fall of 2012.

Continental Tire North America Incorporated is also planning a $350 million tire manufacturing plant in Sumter, South Carolina. Construction includes building a 1 million-square-foot building on a 330-acre site that will manufacture passenger cars and light trucks. The facility will have the capacity to produce 5 million tires per year when it reaches full production in 2017. Construction is expected to begin by June of this year, with overall completion slated by 2013.

Toray Plastics America Incorporated is considering a $200 million expansion of either its Virginia foam plant or its Rhode Island foam plant. Details about the expansion are still being studied.
