ENVIRONMENT
U.S. Appeals Court Won't Pause EPA Power Plant Emissions Rule for Now - A federal appeals court on Friday refused to temporarily pause a landmark rule issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requiring sweeping reductions in carbon emissions from existing coal-fired power plants and new natural gas plants. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected a request filed by 25 Republican attorneys general for an administrative stay, which would have put the rule, which goes into effect in July, on hold while the court considers whether to impose a longer stay order. The rule mandates that many new gas and existing coal plants reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2032. The court didn't explain its Friday decision, but gave the EPA until mid-June to respond to the challengers' requests for a longer pause on the rule while the court considers the merits of the case. TotalEnergies Strikes Deal with Nigeria's Dangote Refinery - French energy major TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France) struck its first supply deal with Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne said on Friday, following a meeting with Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote. Dangote has been trying to secure crude supplies for his 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, the largest in Africa and Europe when it reaches full capacity. In May, the refinery put out a tender for 2 million barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Midland crude oil every month for a year starting in July.
