With Influx of Renewables, California Votes to Close Two Remaining Nuclear Reactors

SUGAR LAND--January 15, 2018--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The California Public Utilities Commission recently voted to let the state's two remaining nuclear reactors, located at the Diablo Canyon power plant near Avila Beach, be permanently closed when their federal operating licenses expire in 2024 and 2025. The plant's owner and operator, PG&E Corporation (NYSE:PCG) (San Francisco, California), says the reactors' carbon-free power generation will no longer be needed due to an influx of renewable energy into the state and lower consumer usage. The facility has a generating capacity of 2,256 megawatts (MW).
