Renewable hydrogen can be generated when hydro, solar or wind power is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using an electrolyzer. Under Premier Mark McGowan, Western Australia has allocated AUD$1.68 million (US$1.13 million) to fund seven feasibility studies for proposed renewable hydrogen projects across the state, ranging from a facility in the Wheatbelt region to one in the city of Cockburn (Perth).
