April 12, 2024--Written by John Egan for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In a ruling that could boost electric vehicle (EV) sales and influence the presidential election, a panel of three federal appeals court judges on April 9 restored California's ability to set vehicle tailpipe emissions standards that were stricter than the federal government's standards. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have adopted vehicle tailpipe emission standards that mirror, to some degree, California's. Some of those states also include the Golden State's mandate that zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) account for a certain percentage of all vehicles sold in that state after a certain date.
