Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chilean company Arauco (Santiago,Chile) awaits legal permission from local environmental authorities to proceed with the construction of a discharge pipeline at the company's Valdivia facility (Los Lagos, Chile). The permitt is expected to be ready in the fourth quarter of this year. The total cost of the project is estimated to be about $65 million.

The project consists of the building of a pipeline to discharge industrial effluents from the Valdivia Pulp Mill to the sea, specifically to Caleta Mehui in Bahía Maiquillahue (Chile). The pipeline will have a length of approximately 36 kilometers and a depth of 18 meters. The company submitted two environmental impact reports to the Regional Environmental Commission (COREMA ) from Los Ríos.

One of these was approved, but company officials are still awaiting the license related to the occupation and use of the maritime-terrestrial public domain. That authorization was expected to be granted in June 2010, but the deadline was postponed to December. If approved, civil works would start in November 2011, and the duct would be ready in the the fourth quarter of 2013.

Valdivias's mill is located in the Los Lagos region of Chile and started operations in 2004. The mill currently has a production capacity of 550,000 tons per year of bleached kraft softwood pulp and employs approximately 360 people. The plant is equipped with a 120-megawatt powerhouse that provides the mill with electricity and vapor for the production of pulp.

Arauco is one of the largest forestry companies in Latin America. It produces and markets kraft woodpulp, sawn timber and panels. The enterprise currently exports products to more than 50 countries worlwide
