Cardinal Ethanol Expects to Have New Indiana Plant Fully Operational by as Early as Next Week

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned Cardinal Ethanol LLC (Union City, Indiana) is performing start-up and equipment-testing procedures in anticipation of having a new fuel ethanol plant in Union City fully operational by as early as next week. The plant began taking in corn in late September into the facility's two giant corn storage silos, which can be seen from miles away on the Indiana plains landscape.

Construction began in February 2007 and took less than 20 months to complete. The estimated $150 million plant will have the ability of producing 100 million gallons per year at full capacity of the renewable fuel from 36 million bushels of corn annually. The plant will also generate about 320,000 tons of distillers dried grains, a byproduct of ethanol production.

The plant was built by the design-build team of ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) and Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota). The ethanol produced at the plant will be marketed by Murex N.A. Limited (Dallas, Texas) and the distillers grains by CHS Incorporated (NASDAQ:CHSCP) (Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota).

The site in Union City near the Indiana-Ohio border has excellent rail and truck infrastructure and an abundance of local corn farmers to supply the plant with feedstock. The plant is located at the corner of Highway 32 and road N 600 E in Randolph County.

Indiana has 11 operational fuel ethanol plants with the capacity of producing 875 million gallons per year. Two additional plants are under construction in the state that will add a further 280 million gallons of capacity when construction is completed.
