Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China Nuclear Industry No.22 Engineering Company Limited (Yichang, Hubei) (CNI22), a subsidiary of China Nuclear Engineering Corporation (CNEC) (Beijing), completed the dome erection for Unit 2 of the Changjiang Nuclear Power Project in Hainan on September 25, 2012, according to a recent announcement from the CNEC.
The dome erection was performed by a SCC9000 crawler crane, with a rated lifting capacity of 900 metric tons, on the morning of September 25, 2012. After about an hour of lifting, the 173-metric-ton dome for the safety container of the reactor was erected to its final position smoothly.
The Changjiang Nuclear Power Project, located at Tangxing Village, Haiwei Town of Changjiang Li Nationality Autonomous Region in South China's Hainan Province, is jointly invested by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) (Beijing) (51%) and China Huaneng Group (Beijing) (49%). The project has a total planned capacity of four large-scale nuclear power units, each of 650 megawatts (MW). Of these, two 650-MW pressurized water reactor-based CNP650 nuclear power units from CNNC will be built in Phase I, with a total investment of more than $3 billion.
CNI22 won the civil construction for the project in early 2010. Since the official kickoff of the project in April 2010, CNI22 has overcome a string of bad weather, including typhoon, storms, and a long-lasting drought experienced during the construction of the project. Erection of the dome for Unit 1 had been achieved 28 days ahead of schedule. Based on this successful experience, CNI22 has adopted a series of new measures to ensure timely achievement of dome erection. Successful completion of the dome erection for Unit 2 means that the unit has shifted from civil construction into total erection stage, which has paved a firm foundation for the timely commissioning of the project.
According to the schedule, units 1 and 2 of the project will be put into operation in an interval of 10 months in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Upon completion, the project will be able to generate about 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, which could greatly reduce the construction of coal-fired units and hence reduce the emission of pollutants from coal-fired power plants in Hainan.
