ConocoPhillips Plans to Invest $80 Million to Expand San Juan Basin Natural Gas Processing Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) is planning to invest approximately $85 million to expand natural gas processing capacity at the San Juan Basin plant near Bloomfield, New Mexico. The plant's current configuration is a dual 250 million-cubic-foot-per-day (mmcfd) cryogenic train that can process 500 mmcfd of natural gas. The plant has an NGL production capacity of approximately 50,000 barrels per day (BBL/d), which is the third largest in the U.S. at present.

ConocoPhillips is studying the feasibility of constructing a third cryogenic train with a capacity to process 150 mmcfd of natural gas. The new train will have the ability to produce between 10,000 and 13,000 BBL/d of NGL. To supply the additional compression that will be needed for the new cryogenic train, a new 15,000 horsepower turbine-driven compressor package will be installed at the existing site and will bring the total compression of the plant to 60,000 horsepower.

ConocoPhillips expects to begin construction on the cryogenic train in early 2009 with a targeted in service date for the additional capacity some time in mid-2010. The new train will most likely be tied into the existing plant during the plant's annual maintenance turnaround, which historically occurs in May of each year.
