The automotive sector is a big player in the region, and among the largest auto projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter is Ford Motor Company's (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) upgrade and retooling project at its assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. Ford will discontinue an existing plastic painting operation and modify the existing body shop and assembly line to manufacture the next-generation Mustang and electric vehicles. A new paint shop will be established. Gala & Associates Incorporated (Beverly Hills, Michigan) is providing architectural and engineering services on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

As electric vehicles become more prominent, the need for the batteries to run them is increasing. AKASOL AG (Darmstadt, Germany) is preparing to construct a brownfield automotive lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant at the former Hazel Park Raceway site in Detroit, MIchigan. The project entails constructing an approximately 600,000-square-foot building and manufacturing equipment to supply both domestic and international customers. The project is expected to kick off early in the quarter and be completed in late 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

As with other market regions, data center projects represent a large part of the Great Lakes region's first-quarter activity. In New Albany, Ohio, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) is preparing a Phase III expansion of an existing data center campus. Amazon will construct a 157,000-square-foot building with equipment and systems to provide expanded cloud data services in the region. The $300 million project is expected to be completed late next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Data center giant Switch SUPERNAP LLC (Las Vegas, Nevada) also is performing a Phase III expansion at its data center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This part of the approximately $5 billion overall project includes constructing a 382,000-square-foot data center with up to 100 megawatts of power. The project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Necessitating data center expansions is a rise in e-commerce, leading to increased distribution hubs to deliver goods to customers. In Plain City, Ohio, FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) plans to begin construction on a grassroot trucking distribution center in the upcoming quarter. The 488,000-square-foot building will be expandable to 530,000 square feet and will support the company's regional distribution operations. The project, which has an estimated total investment value of $100 million, is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info also is tracking several smaller projects at traditional manufacturing facilities that are planned to kick off in the region in the quarter. Examples include Henry Penny Corporation's (Eaton, Ohio) expansion of its cooking equipment manufacturing in Eaton. A 150,000-square-foot building addition will house new production machinery and auxiliary equipment, increasing the facility's size by 35%. Construction is expected to kick off early in the first quarter and be completed in the fourth quarter. Miller-Valentine Group Incorporated (Dayton, Ohio) is the general contractor.
