Iowa's 39th Fuel Ethanol Plant Begins Grinding Corn This Month

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned Homeland Energy Solutions LLC (Riceville, Iowa) has completed commissioning activities and has started up Iowa's 39th fuel ethanol plant. Iowa's ethanol plants have a combined production capacity of more than 3.2 billion gallons of the renewable fuel annually and lead all states in production.

Construction of the Homeland Energy Solutions plant began in May of 2007. The plant is being built by the design-build team of ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) and Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota). The 100 million-gallon-per-year plant will require 37 million bushels of corn annually to produce the fuel and will also generate 333,000 tons of distillers dried grains each year.

The plant has two 500,000-bushel concrete silos, two 20,000-bushel-per-hour grain handling legs to handle incoming corn and two 1.5 million-gallon ethanol storage tanks. Finished product from the plant will be shipped via railcar and truck.

The ethanol produced at the plant will be marketed by Green Plains Renewable Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:GPRE) (Omaha, Nebraska), and the distillers dried grains will be marketed by CHS Incorporated (Inver Grove Heights, Illinois).

The estimated $150 million plant is located between Lawler and New Hampton, Iowa, on Highway 24, about 80 miles north of Cedar Rapids in Chickasaw County. Homeland has hired 36 employees to run the plant, and all of the staff was trained by ICM.
