Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Global engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:J) (Dallas, Texas) made a major divestment last year when it unloaded its Energy, Chemicals and Resources division to WorleyParsons (North Sydney, Australia), which subsequently rebranded as Worley. However, that doesn't appear to be slowing the company's activity. In the quarter ending December 27, 2019, its first fiscal quarter of 2020, Jacobs raised its backlog by $2.3 billion year over year, an 11% increase. In addition, quarterly net revenue increased to $2.7 billion from $2.4 billion in the year-prior quarter.
Last year, Jacobs restructured to form two operating segments: Critical Missions Solutions (formerly Aerospace, Technology and Nuclear) and People & Places Solutions (formerly Building, Infrastructure and Advanced Facilities). The Critical Missions Solutions segment, which handles government contracts among other things, hosted a backlog of $8.5 billion at the end of the quarter, and the People & Places Solutions segment had a backlog of $14.2 billion.
Transportation systems projects are a key element of Jacobs' project activity, and among the largest of this type of project in which Jacobs has a hand is the construction of a commuter rail line in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first segment spans seven miles and includes seven stations. Construction kicked off in 2014 and is expected to wrap up this year. An extension to the line is already underway, and construction on another 4-mile extension recently began and is expected to be completed in 2025. Click here for a list of associated projects.
In its hometown of Dallas, Texas, Jacobs is the design engineer for a regional rail expansion that will run from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport eastward to the Plano/Richardson area suburbs. The project includes the construction of 26 miles of rail line and 10 stations. Construction began recently and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among Jacobs' other undertakings are various projects in the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry. Among the largest of these is a fill/finish plant for Merck & Company Incorporated's (NYSE:MRK) (Kenilworth, New Jersey) Gardasil human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in Durham, North Carolina. The $650 million project includes construction of a two-story, approximately 226,000-square-foot building with 175,000 square feet of production space among other aspects. Construction kicked off last year and is expected to be completed in early 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Sanford, North Carolina, Jacobs is providing EPC services for the construction of a gene therapy center addition for a meningitis vaccine for Pfizer Incorporated (NYSE:PFE) (New York, New York). The 95,500-square-foot building will allow for the production of clinical- and commercial-scale quantities of gene therapy medicines that use custom-made virus vectors. Construction kicked off last summer and will wrap up in the second half of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Metals & Minerals Industry also features in Jacobs' project activity, including a $700 million grassroot direct reduced iron/hot briquetted iron plant in Toledo, Ohio. On completion, the new Cleveland-Cliffs Incorporated (NYSE:CLF) (Cleveland, Ohio) plant will produce 1.9 million tons per year of direct reduced iron and hot briquetted iron for the steel manufacturing sector. Jacobs is the engineer on the project, which kicked off in 2018 and is expected to wrap up this summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Guthrie, Kentucky, Jacobs is at work on Novelis Incorporated's (Atlanta, Georgia) automotive aluminum sheet mill. The 200,000-ton-per-year plant will include pre-treatment and heat-treatment lines to produce sheet for automobile components such as hoods, doors, lift gates and fenders. Jacobs is the engineer, and Denham-Blythe Company Incorporated (Lexington, Kentucky) is the general contractor. The project kicked off in mid-2018 and is expected to be completed this quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
