Siemens Bags $590 Million Saudi Arabian Power Unit Supply Contract

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In December 2013, Samsung C&T was awarded the $1.2 billion engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Rabigh 2 independent power project in Saudi Arabia. Samsung formed a joint venture (JV) with Acwa Power (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) to take a 50% share in the project operating company, Al Mourjan for Electricity Production Company, with state-owned utility Saudi Electric Co. (SEC) (Riyadh) holding the 50% balance.

Samsung has awarded Siemens Energy (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) a $590 million contract to supply six gas turbines, three steam turbines and nine generators for the combined cycle project, which when completed in 2017, will provide 2,060 megawatts (MW) to Makkah province. The plant site is in western Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea coast 150 kilometers north of Jeddah.

Siemens will supply SG-T6-5000F gas turbines, one model SST6-5000 Hi-L steam turbine and three SGen6-1000A-series electrical generators. The company will also provide support services for erection and commissioning of the plant and a long-term service agreement covering upkeep and maintenance of the gas turbines. The units are designed as multi-shaft configurations in which each gas turbine and steam turbine drives its own dedicated generator. In addition to natural gas, the units can also be fired with petroleum.
