Typhoons to Blame for Green Future Innovations Integrated Ethanol Facility in the Philippines

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--An ethanol facility being constructed by Green Future Innovations (Tokyo, Japan), a new joint venture formed by JGC Corporation (TYO:1963) (Yokohama, Japan) and Itochu Corporation (TYO:8001) (Tokyo), has been delayed due to typhoons that hit the area in September of last year.

Typhoon Pedring struck the agricultural provinces of Isabela and Aurora in the Philippines the hardest. The delay has pushed back the opening of the facility from March to June of this year. The mechanical equipment has been installed, and 90% of the construction is complete. JGC Corporation and Itochu received the engineering, procurement and construction contract to build the facility.

The estimated $120 million facility includes a 11,000-hectare sugar cane plantation; a 54 million-liter-per-year fuel ethanol plant; and a 16 megawatt (MW), bagasse-fired biomass cogeneration facility. The Treveni steam turbine has been ordered, along with the boiler island. When operational, the plant will use about 6 MW of power for the plant, and the remaining 13 MW will go to the Luzon power grid.

The fuel ethanol produced at the plant will go toward the country's goal of utilizing 460 million liters per year of the fuel to meet a proposed 10% ethanol blend. The Philippine government said it needs about 13 more ethanol plants of about the same capacity to meet future demand.
