Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources, Incorporated (Sugar Land, Texas)--The University of Arizona has completed construction on the $136 million Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building (BSPB). The 10-story, 245,000-square-foot building is the newest addition to the expanding downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus, adjacent to the school's $164 million Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB).
The striking, copper-clad LEED facility, designed by CO Architects (Los Angeles, California) and Ayres Saint Gross (Phoenix, Arizona), will house collaborative research in neurosciences, health care outcomes, cancer and medicine. One of the BSPB's new tenants will be The Center for Applied Nanoscience and Biomedicine. Its researchers are making cutting-edge discoveries, such as the Rapid DNA test, which detects early-stage bacterial infections.
Other BSPB features include a centralized water-purification system, centralized liquid nitrogen and wet benches. All of the building's structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems, designed and sized for maximum flexibility, will allow ease of future conversions to the existing research space, and the ability to meet future scientific demand.
There are distributed core spaces dedicated to flow cytometry, histology, microscopy, radioisotope and tissue culture, all supporting genomics and proteomics research. Upper floors will consist of dry laboratories supporting computational biology and biomechanical engineering.
DPR Construction and Sundt Construction, operating under a joint venture, managed construction of the project. The team also oversaw construction of the HSEB project.
