Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking slightly more than $3.3 billion in planned first-quarter Industrial Manufacturing project starts in the U.S. West Coast market region, which includes California, Oregon and Washington as well as Alaska and Hawaii. California, with more than $2.8 billion in planned activity, leads in terms of project value.

California leads in part because of a high-dollar rail project that is planned to kick off in Montclair, on the eastern outskirts of Los Angeles. The Metro Gold Line Construction Authority (Monrovia, California) will extend the Metro Gold light rail line to the east by constructing 12.3 miles of new track. The project also includes the construction of six stations, parking structures and 11 traction power substations as well as basic rail components such as signal systems. Construction is expected to kick off early in the quarter and take about six years to complete. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles) is providing engineering. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

No U.S. market region would be complete without its share of upcoming data center projects, and the West Coast is no exception. Among the several data center projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter is CoreSite Realty Corporation's (Denver, Colorado) Phase I construction on a data center at a brownfield site in Los Angeles. The facility will be built on an existing parking lot and will include a 175,000-square-foot, four-story building with 24 megawatts (MW) of power capability. DPR Construction Incorporated (Redwood City, California) is the general contractor on the project, which has an estimated total investment value of $134 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Related to the expansion of the nation's data center footprint is a rise in e-commerce, and the leader in this field, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), is planning to construct a grassroot fulfillment center in San Ysidro, California, south of San Diego, near the Mexico border. The facility will be built on a 65-acre site and will include a four-story, 2.65 million-square-foot building to support the region's fulfillment and distribution operations. The $450 million project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Electric vehicles are becoming a big-ticket item and near Spokane, Washington, Mullen Technologies (Brea, California) plans to begin construction on a grassroot electric vehicle manufacturing plant. The project is the first phase of a planned 1.3 million-square-foot facility and entails constructing a 500,000-square-foot assembly plant to manufacture the company's Qiantu K50 electric sports car. Phase I is expected to be completed in the first half of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Microgrids are included in Industrial Info's coverage of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, and in Riverside, California, the California Air Resources Board (Sacramento, California) plans to construct a 3.5-MW rooftop photovoltaic solar system using Envision Solar's (San Diego) Solar Tree solar modules to provide power to the agency's new headquarters and testing facility. A central utilities plant also will be constructed to provide chilled and hot water and backup power throughout the facility through a battery energy storage system. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the solar system and utilities plant.

Several smaller, more traditional manufacturing projects are planned to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter, including Lawrence Equipment's (South El Monte, California) grassroot food processing machinery manufacturing plant in Banning, California, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles. The 146,890-square-foot facility will be divided into manufacturing and warehouse space and will include loading docks, shipping bays and rail unloading equipment. The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
