Weyerhaeuser Expands Production Capacity at Uruguayan Plywood Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pulp, paper and forest products company Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY) (Federal Way, Washington) has begun studies to expedite the expansion of a plywood mill in Tacuarembo, Uruguay. The total investment value of the project is estimated to be $70 million.

The project will increase the plant's plywood manufacturing capacity from 140,000 cubic meters per year to 300,000 cubic meters per year. The expansion involves the addition and replacement of equipment, as well as upgrades to existing equipment. Plant officials anticipate completing the studies and expediting plans by the end of August 2010. In-house engineering will be performed. Construction of the project is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2010 and be completed in the first quarter of 2011.

Los Piques plywood mill began operating in 2005 and employs approximately 290 people. The mill currently manufactures 140,000 cubic meters of plywood panels.
