The Troubled Future of Coal-Fired Power Generation: Decommissioning is Set for Martin Drake Power Plant

SUGAR LAND--February 8, 2016--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last month, Industrial Info published an article detailing a pending vote on the future of the Martin Drake Power Plant. In December of last year, City Council members sitting on the board of Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU), voted 6-4 in favor of a plan to shut the entire plant down by 2035. Unresolved at the time was the more immediate future of Unit 5. In essence, the options were to either decommission the unit, or to convert the unit to run on natural gas rather than coal. That vote has now been held and the decision is clear: Unit 5 will be decommissioned by the end of 2017.
