Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 200-megawatt (MW) Courtenay Windfarm in Stutsman County, North Dakota, began commercial operations earlier this month, following its completion by Xcel Energy Incorporated (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota). This project is part of Xcel Energy's plan to provide customers in the upper Midwest with reliable, cost-effective energy.
The Courtenay Windfarm was originally developed by Geronimo Energy (Minneapolis) and was acquired by Xcel Energy in 2015. The windfarm uses 100 Vestas V110 wind turbines, and generates enough energy to power approximately 100,000 homes and businesses. Xcel Energy completed a similar project late last year: the 150-MW Border Windfarm in Rolette County, North Dakota.
Construction of the Courtenay Windfarm was completed by Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota), and the project qualifies for the U.S. renewable energy production tax credit. The project employed more than 200 people during the peak of construction and has created several full-time jobs.
The project had a total investment value of $350 million and took 11 months to be constructed, commissioned and brought to commercial operations. Xcel Energy owns the project, and Vestas Wind Technology will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the windfarm under a long-term service agreement.
