Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 673-megawatt (MW) Unit 3 and the 180-MW Unit 1 at the coal-fired Thomas Hill Energy Center, which is located in Clifton Hill, Missouri, were shut down for unscheduled repairs on Saturday, January 10, and Sunday, January 11. The facility is owned by Associated Electric Cooperative Incorporated (AECI) (Springfield, Missouri).
Unit 1 was forced offline after leakage was detected in the water wall tubes of the boiler, while Unit 3 experienced a thrust bearing trip caused by a faulty control.
Plant officials said that they have analyzed the issues with both units and have begun preparing Unit 3 for a return to service by Tuesday, January 13. Unit 1 is under investigation, although officials have located the position of the leaks. The repairs will resume after the boiler has cooled enough to get in and isolate the leakage.
Officials anticipate returning Unit 1 to service on Thursday, January 15, if there are no additional delays.
The plant has three operational units with a total capacity of 1,153 MW when at full load. Unit 2 remains in service and is generating at full load.
